Roll down the grassy hill
The oldest game in the world, still the best

Find any gentle grassy slope and take turns rolling, crawling and running back up. Older kids can count rolls and be the catcher at the bottom.
You’ll need
- A gentle grassy hill
- Clothes that can get grass stains
How to do it together
- 1
Walk the hill first and check there are no rocks, sticks or holes.
- 2
Lie down at the top, arms over your head, and roll all the way down.
- 3
Race back up, then try new ways down: crab walk, giant steps, sideways shuffle.
- 4
Take turns being the catcher at the bottom.
- 5
Finish lying side by side at the bottom, looking at the clouds.
Safety: Pick a gentle slope away from roads, water and trees at the bottom.
Make it easier
Little ones can roll on a very small slope, with you rolling right beside them.
Make it harder
Older kids can count rolls, time their runs back up, and invent the rules for a hill race.
Why it’s worth it
It costs nothing and every kid loves it. When was the last time you rolled down a hill? Your kids will laugh harder at you than at the hill.

Every Sunday, a plan with a 10-minute idea for each child on weeknights and a family one for the weekend, picked for their ages and what they love.
