Parents vs. kids match
A friendly game with rules that keep it close

A friendly soccer or basketball match, parents against kids. Change the rules as you go so it always stays close, and let the kids pick the final score celebration.
You’ll need
- A ball
- Something to mark goals (shoes, cones, two trees)
- A yard, a park or a court
How to do it together
- 1
Pick the sport and mark two goals with shoes, cones or trees.
- 2
Parents against kids. Before you start, let the kids choose one handicap for the grown-ups: only left foot, walking only, or one hand behind the back.
- 3
Play short halves of 10 minutes.
- 4
If one team gets ahead by 3, the team that's behind picks a new rule for the other side.
- 5
End with a handshake line and let the kids invent the victory dance (whoever wins).
Make it easier
With younger kids, play with a big soft ball and make the goals huge.
Make it harder
Older kids can referee one half, keep score and call the fouls. Expect them to be strict with you.
Why it’s worth it
Kids love beating their parents, and they love it even more when it's close. The silly handicaps keep everyone laughing instead of keeping score.
