Make a settle-down jar

A glitter jar to calm down together

15 min Ages 5-8 Indoors Rainy dayNothing to buy
Make a settle-down jar: a parent and child doing it together

Fill a jar with water, a squirt of soap and some glitter, then shake it and watch it settle while you both breathe slowly. Keep it on a shelf for big-feeling moments.

You’ll need

How to do it together

  1. 1

Fill the jar most of the way with warm water.

  2. 2

Add a squirt of dish soap or clear glue and a big spoonful of glitter.

  3. 3

Close the lid tightly (a grown-up can glue it shut).

  4. 4

Shake it and watch the glitter swirl, like a busy brain.

  5. 5

Breathe slowly together while it settles. Talk about when you could use it.

Safety: Use a plastic jar and glue the lid shut so the glitter stays inside.

Make it easier

Use a small plastic bottle, and let your child pick the glitter colors.

Make it harder

Add small floating objects, and test which mixture makes the glitter fall slowest.

Why it’s worth it

It gives your child a tool for big feelings, and a calm moment to practice using it with you.
