Geocaching treasure hunt
A real treasure hunt hidden in your own town

Use a free geocaching app to find a small container someone hid near you, sign the logbook together, and put it back for the next family.
You’ll need
- A phone with a free geocaching app
- A pen
- Comfortable shoes
How to do it together
- 1
Download a free geocaching app and look at the map together: there are probably caches within a mile of your home.
- 2
Pick an easy one (look for difficulty 1 or 1.5, size small or regular) in a park or public place.
- 3
Let your child hold the phone and lead the way as the arrow points you closer.
- 4
When you're near, search together: under benches, in tree roots, behind signs. No digging needed.
- 5
Sign the logbook with a family name, put it back exactly where it was, and mark it as found in the app.
Safety: Stay together, only search public places, and never go onto private property or near roads to reach a cache.
Make it easier
For a 7-year-old, choose a cache that's a short walk away and give clues: "Look low, near something wooden."
Make it harder
Older kids can pick a harder one, read the hint only if you're stuck, and plan a route through two or three caches.
Why it’s worth it
It turns an ordinary walk into a mission, and kids discover that their town is full of secrets. Most families find one and immediately want the next.
