Flashlight night walk
Listen to the night together

Take the family out after dark with flashlights to listen for owls, crickets and rustles, stopping to stay silent for one full minute. The dark makes everyone talk differently.
You’ll need
- Flashlights or phone lights
- Jackets
- A path or block you know well
How to do it together
- 1
Pick a path or a loop around your block you know in daylight.
- 2
Head out after dark with a flashlight each.
- 3
Every few minutes, stop and listen. Name three sounds you hear.
- 4
Once, turn the lights off and stay completely silent for one full minute.
- 5
Look for a moon shadow and for eye-shine (animal eyes reflecting your light).
Safety: Stay on paths and sidewalks you know, and stay together.
Make it easier
Keep it short, and hold hands in the darkest parts.
Make it harder
Older kids can lead the way with the map, and keep a list of night sounds.
Why it’s worth it
Walking in the dark side by side, kids open up. The silent minute is the part they talk about later.
With Weekadoo
In your weekly plan, this idea comes with night-walk missions and listening prompts (spot a moon shadow, name three night sounds, find an animal eye-shine), written for your child
Every Sunday, a plan with a 10-minute idea for each child on weeknights and a family one for the weekend, picked for their ages and what they love.
