Evening read-aloud
Take turns, stop on a cliffhanger

Read a chapter of an adventure book aloud, taking turns page by page. Stop on a cliffhanger so everyone wants to come back tomorrow.
You’ll need
- An adventure book (from home or the library)
- A cozy spot
How to do it together
- 1
Pick an adventure book together. A series is perfect, because one book becomes many evenings.
- 2
Get comfortable: bed, couch or a blanket fort.
- 3
Take turns reading a page each. Use voices for the characters, and be dramatic.
- 4
Stop at the most exciting moment, even mid-chapter.
- 5
Ask: what do you think happens next? Write down the guesses and check tomorrow.
Make it easier
For 4- and 5-year-olds, you read and they "read" the pictures, or they read one word per page.
Make it harder
Older kids can read a whole chapter to you, or pick a book you haven't read yet.
Why it’s worth it
Reading together keeps going long after kids can read alone. It's twenty minutes of being close with nothing else to do.
